Navigating the Challenges of Filmmaking in Today's Industry
"To thrive, filmmakers must create their own opportunities."
“We’re creating our own opportunities because that’s been my problem—financial aspects and not working, right? So I can at least raise the money that will allow me to do what I want to do, which then solves multiple fronts.”

Filmmaking in a Time of Uncertainty:
The world of filmmaking is ever-evolving, and recent times have brought unique challenges to the industry. The ongoing uncertainties, including production slowdowns and potential strikes, have left many professionals in the field seeking alternative ways to sustain their careers. Christine Chen shares her perspective, emphasizing the significance of staying connected to your community. In her words, “It helps to go on that hike with your fellow crew member who's also not working and just commiserate about, ‘Hey, you're not working either? Great, in solidarity.’”
"Shopping for a gift for a film student shouldn't feel like a final exam.
But here you are — staring at an Amazon search bar, wondering if they already own that book, if they'd actually use that thing, or if you're about to drop forty bucks on something that collects dust. We've been there. The difference is, we've also been on the actual set. The people behind Get Reelisms have spent years working in film — as a DGA 1st AD, a production designer, and a sound mixer. We know what film students really need, what seasoned crew actually use, and what ends up as a birthday gift that quietly gets donated to a film school prop room. This list is the real one. No filler. Here is our list for BEST GIFTS FOR FILM STUDENTS
Creating Opportunities:
To thrive, filmmakers must create their own opportunities. Christine talks about her goal of raising funds for a slate of films, emphasizing the need to be innovative and resourceful. This proactive approach not only opens doors to new projects but also provides financial stability. As she puts it, “We’re creating our own opportunities because that’s been my problem—financial aspects and not working, right? So I can at least raise the money that will allow me to do what I want to do, which then solves multiple fronts.”
Educational Endeavors:
Christine is also excited to introduce the Get Reelisms Academy, which aims to make filmmaking accessible and fun. The academy encourages creators to learn from the experiences of industry professionals and provides a platform for sharing knowledge. Her message is clear: “Filmmaking is accessible. You don’t need a RED camera or an Arri Alexa to make something. You literally can use your phone.”
Staying Inspired:
Christine recounts her recent trip to Taiwan, which provided her with a fresh perspective and motivation to keep writing. In her narrative, she highlights the power of understanding our roots and drawing strength from the resilience of past generations.
The Hannah Gutierrez Case:
Adam also delves into the ongoing trial involving armorer Hannah Gutierrez, a significant legal case in the filmmaking community. While discussing this case, Adam encourages filmmakers to learn from the situation, as it unfolds with numerous lessons about set safety and accountability. He reflects, “This whole case is, in my opinion, really important and should be absolutely enlightening for filmmakers.”
Conclusion:
In conclusion, these challenging times require filmmakers to be resilient, resourceful, and supportive of one another. Whether you're working on a personal project, volunteering, teaching, or networking within your community, remember that you're not alone. As Christine wisely advises, “Use this time to reconnect with your community. Stay in it, no egos, take whatever temp jobs you need to get through this."
We hope this blog post has offered you some valuable insights and encouragement. Keep pushing through, stay creative, and remember that the world of filmmaking is both a challenge and a privilege. Happy creating, everyone!

Adam Chase Rani: [00:00:00] Talk about filmmaking education. This is probably the primo of film school education is literally this case just by way of how many things have come to light in, in this case, especially with the opening arguments from the prosecution and the defense, which is represented by the armor, Hannah Gutierrez, that is probably the most...
Christine W Chen: Can you give a one or two sentence summary of what you've learned so far?
Adam Chase Rani: We still don't know where the live rounds have come from. So we're still trying to figure that out. However, Hannah is most likely. As far as I've seen so far, not the only guilty person. Here we are the
Christine W Chen & Adam Chase Rani: Get Reelisms podcast.
Adam Chase Rani: I am Adam Chase Rani,
Christine W Chen & Adam Chase Rani: and I am Christine Chen and surprise, we're both filmmakers.
Adam Chase Rani: We get into it by sharing secrets. Advice and gossip and film, [00:01:00]
Christine W Chen & Adam Chase Rani: and we even get our other filmmaking friends to share theirs too. So please, everybody
Adam Chase Rani: join us for...
Christine W Chen & Adam Chase Rani: An ode to...
Christine W Chen: Filmmaking,
Adam Chase Rani: Ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to another episode of the Get Reelisms podcast, episode one 40. My name is Adam Chase Rani.
Christine W Chen: And I am Christine Chen.
Adam Chase Rani: Welcome one and all. My power went out and you want to know how my power went out, Christine?
Christine W Chen: How did your power go out?
Adam Chase Rani: So my neighbor without my neighbor knowing or understanding, there was we share somehow, We don't share it. It's on my side, but there's an outside electrical outlet. That's right outside my house.
Adam Chase Rani: And my neighbor, accidentally used that outlet and to, in their credit it looks like it's part of their house, like for some reason. So like in the backyard where, I have my driveway and then just adjacent is where, the neighbors are at. So my neighbor has, that looks like an outlet on their side. Turns out, do you, does anybody care about this story? I feel like nobody gives a shit about this. Yeah, it doesn't matter anyways.
Christine W Chen: So your neighbor had plugged into an outlet they shouldn't have and it blew out your power.
Adam Chase Rani: It fucking, it completely blew out my power and their power. So we were both trying to figure out [00:02:00] what the fuck just happened and it was an entire mess and all my smoke detectors went off and it might go off.
Again, I didn't think about it till right now. And I'm like this bitch might just fucking go off again. So if that does happen, I'm, I apologize. It will, we'll cut around the audio. It's all sorry for the live
Christine W Chen: for your issues. Look at my background guys. Yeah. I'm very proud of my background.
Adam Chase Rani: It's fucking sick. And you got to, you got an MTF, a microphone cover too. That's fucking sick.
Christine W Chen: I'm bringing things from the dead. I've always had this, but it's been a ways. Just curious, when Chris is making her way to Thailand, let me use that option. I wanna go! Oh my gosh, so I have a friend named Kyle. Wait, he joined us he kinda came and chatted for a little bit on, about writing. But, he did the romantic thing and sold everything and then went to Thailand. He's doing a whole, travel show and everything, and I've been living vicariously through this travel show. Called Fork in the Road. Fork in the Road. Because that's what I want to do. I regret that I didn't jump over from Taiwan to Thailand to meet them and do like my own Anthony [00:03:00] Bourdain.
But if I were there, Kyle, I would take over your entire show, which wouldn't work out for y'all. Not on purpose. It's just like what happens. Yeah. Yeah, but yes, I have been building this back, this podcast corner, off and on before I left for Taiwan, actually. So when I came back from Vancouver, I started to, this was my Christmas gift, basically, from my parents.
Thank you very much. They didn't buy this. They were like, here you go spend this on however you want it to be. And, this What I did, this is
I started building it when I keep it when I keep Hoover. It's just me. And it was me. I don't have a plan. I've been looking at Pinterest at things that like [00:04:00] inspire me. And this little Art Display has been with me for a long time and I've kept it in know, not knowing what I would do with it. It was the first art piece that I made when I had my first apartment in Houston, Texas and this, so this was in 20 2008.
Wow. It looked like this though. So it was actually, the background was line green. And the little circles were orange, to match my room and I was looking at that. I'm like, I need to do something with this. It's either I do something with this or I throw it away right now. Because this has been with me through multiple story, everything till now.
And so I reconverted it. I just had a, Ooh, I know what I'm going to do. And I painted the back, and all that. And yeah, and This was the display. This is not what I had intended. If you look at my podcast, like if you look at my [00:05:00] Pinterest and you look at this, you're like, how did you get this from all that?
Adam Chase Rani: It's more of an inspo, right? With Pinterest. That's fucking crazy though, that you painted each of those squares. What about the yellow ones? Where did you already have yellow squares already? The
Christine W Chen: yellow ones are actually foam.Yeah. Yes. I. That's where all this stuff.
Adam Chase Rani: Huh.
Christine W Chen: And yeah,
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah also, I don't know what, what's happening, but the microphone kept cutting in and out through that time you were talking. I don't know what, I don't know what happened, but, It worked like when you, I think because like when you turn the microphone like that, then it's gonna, how, so are you using that same USB that I gave you?
Okay. That it might be wearing down by now. It's been a couple of years.
Christine W Chen: Okay. Okay, cool.
Adam Chase Rani: I was gonna, we could talk [00:06:00] about this after the podcast, all this tech shit. But yeah,
Christine W Chen: the last time we talked, I was in Taiwan.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah.
Christine W Chen: Okay.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah, and you worked on all this on all your background shit beforehand, right?
Christine W Chen: Yeah, I did a week before before I left. I worked on part of as much as I could, and then like when I came back, I started to finish up, finish it off, and I've been tweaking here and there because I'm like, I'm gonna surprise Adam. Yeah, and this fucking rule,
Adam Chase Rani: I love It's been a
Christine W Chen: while, it's
Adam Chase Rani: The crazy part is like the color scheme it like fits come like absolutely well with all the all Everything else in the background the aesthetic is fucking is sick
Christine W Chen: I'll take a picture of what it actually looks like.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah.
Christine W Chen: Movie magic everybody movie magic. So
Adam Chase Rani: And once you get a better camera that's going to be that's going to be a no brainer. Yeah. I kept meaning to fuck around with my background, but it's just I have the ERZULIE magnet and my whiteboard and I have the pink lights right here, but that's about it.
Christine W Chen: All right, we're gonna [00:07:00] all up our game.
Adam Chase Rani: Like I try my best.
Christine W Chen: You're going with minimalism. Totally fine.
Adam Chase Rani: And I have a, and we're in a..
Christine W Chen: You have a point.
Adam Chase Rani: Where I, we're in a rainforest right now. You know what I mean? This is my beautiful potted plant. And this infamously has been in everything.
Christine W Chen: Yeah. Four different shorts. Yeah. No, our first pod.
Adam Chase Rani: And the first podcast too. Yeah. Oh, that's right. With fun employment. That's right. But this plant has been in like four different shoots, like four different shorts.
So this plant is fucking famous, bro. So put some respect on that. But no, your background is awesome, dude. I can't wait until you upgrade your your camera.
Christine W Chen: Yes. That's the next step. I have all the supports and stuff. I just need to figure it out, but it takes time.
Adam Chase Rani: So what's been new What's been new?
Christine W Chen: The fact that everything is slow right now. Yeah. Cause. of the industry anticipating that IOC is going to [00:08:00] strike.
Adam Chase Rani: So I read something about that. Do you have an ear to the ground for any of that? Is that like a for sure thing happening? I keep reading it is.
Yeah. Bon Jovi.[00:09:00] Yeah. Oh
Christine W Chen: we have each other and that's okay. I was like, Oh my God, this is describing my entire experience in LA. Yeah, we're halfway there. I keep telling myself we're halfway there. We're I'm living on a prayer right now, but I'm trying my best.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah.
Christine W Chen: Best every day. That's it's that's all you can do, right?
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah.
Christine W Chen: Yeah. And I just, I need to bring shed light on that because, a lot of people think, oh, like you're always working and stuff like that. I'm always working on something.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah.
Christine W Chen: It's paying me. So this is[00:10:00]
Christine W Chen: best the way that we've all been surviving. At least the people that I've talked to has been like really focused on your communities and the people that like, that care about you that are also going through the same thing, because it really helps. It helps to go on the hike with your fellow crew, felt person who's also not working and just commiserate about, Hey, you're not working either.
Christine W Chen: Great. In solidarity, type thing. Like it, it just feels nice to not wallow in your, solid it's in solo thinking that, Oh, I'm the only person who's not working. No, everybody is. It's just really frustrating. So I just got it. If I, my friend said, he, Jess, who's going to we're going to go volunteer for example, together, so things like that too. Since we have time now
Adam Chase Rani: yeah,
Christine W Chen: to stick together,
Adam Chase Rani: all in the downtime. Yeah.
Christine W Chen: It's been so frustrating. I've been like rethinking, side hustles and whatnot. [00:11:00] And that, and I had a conversation also with my friend Calvin who's yeah, he works for Pixar and stuff.
And he's yeah, it's been really slow. And we all. We're on that cusp of let's take temporary.[00:12:00]
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah. What else can you do? We've already been through. half a year with strikes anyways, it's I don't want anybody to not be working. It sucks not working, and the few gigs that we do have, we have to just fucking take them and embrace them as best as we possibly can, because we just don't know when the next gig is going to be it's going to be coming around.
Oh.[00:13:00]
Christine W Chen: This is what they did. They moved to a different country in their 20s. It's so nuts. In their 20s, they peaced out and went to a whole other country that they did not normally survive. So they can do that.[00:14:00]
In Latin America. Yeah. Yeah. But no, it's just been writing. Lots of writing. Going to come to Texas in April. Oh, nice. Yeah. In Austin, helping my friend, Mia Schell, with her first short film. So I'm excited about that.
Adam Chase Rani: Oh, cool. Hell yeah.
Christine W Chen: I actually, plan to, I need to, I'm not, there's two things, I'm gonna, three things I'm gonna put out into the ether. I like saying things publicly because it, it gives me accountability, and I want people to hold me accountable for it. So here, my first one is that I plan on raising money for a slate of films.
A slate [00:15:00] meaning multiple Films in one setting of a Of making of raising money because it's already terrible doing one film you might as well kill multiple birds with one stone and just raise money all at once for several films type thing and I have it set up where I have a few things that would be great in louisiana, so Set these things We're creating our own opportunities.
Because that's been my problem. Financial aspects and not working, right? So I can at least raise the money that will allow me to do what I want to do. Which is self referenced. I'm directing, which is what I want to do. And I'm getting paid, to do that. And paying my friends, that's one [00:16:00] major goal I'm putting in the ether.
The second one is I am going to re release the Get Reelisms account.
Adam Chase Rani: Fuck yeah.
Christine W Chen: I've been sitting on it, I don't know why. I have a test trial for six days. And it's like the idea of Get Reelismss is that I want creators to be able to teach what they have learned in their careers. And I know there are so many different kinds of online YouTube [00:17:00] classes that you can take, but the thing is every single professional does something just a little bit differently. And if there's somebody that you admire. And like their experience and stuff like that. It is very helpful to learn from that person in particular as to what worked for them. Because every person's journey is very different. And so what I'm, the first thing I'm releasing is a very like basic thing. But it's, and it, I wanted, I picked this class specifically because I feel like I started Get Reelismss with Kelly and Jason because I wanted to make filmmaking accessible to people. Accessible and fun. That is really important to me because that's how I started. I didn't know how to do anything and got lucky meeting cool people who are I'm going to do It in this course. So yeah, so that's that. [00:20:00] So those are my, so that's two of them. And then I'm gonna raise the money or have a plan by April 1st was my second one. First one actually. That's my biggest one. And then the third one is there's a group of friends and I are going to be really. Music video. A music video. It's, oh, yes, I'm not, we're not gonna reveal what the title is because I don't want anybody to steal it, it's too good.
All right, you entertain while I try to fix my microphone.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah. Hate to break it, but the last five, 10 minutes of everything that has been said it has been cut in and out between audio. I would say you repeat what you said, but I don't know how well the microphone is just going to keep up between cutting in and out. It's fine. I can hear you through Instagram and whatnot. While you're,
Christine W Chen: Like you hear [00:21:00] that, it's just like the, where it, to me or no, it's not
Adam Chase Rani: that it's connection. It's literally a hundred percent connection. I know that for a fact, because it's been like that since Taiwan, by the way. Yeah. Yeah.
Christine W Chen: Okay. I'm going to try another.
Adam Chase Rani: I mean it's been a couple of years and it's a cheap XLR to USB and it's been like probably since 2020 since I gave it to you, I think, or 2021. But we can, in post, I think we could just take the Instagram audio because you're coming in fine on Instagram. And it works with the mic, like the microphone works for the next amount of time and then it'll just cut out. Randomly. Yeah, I don't know.
Christine W Chen: Alright, so I just need to go get a new XLR.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah.
Christine W Chen: That's really funny. It's good. We're fixing problems.
Adam Chase Rani: No, I don't want to keep derailing the [00:22:00] podcast by, just being like, Oh we didn't, I didn't hear what you said. What'd you say? What'd you say? What'd you say? And I'm just like, you know what? I'm just going to turn up the iPhone and then keep it going. But. Yeah, while you're still doing that adjusting.
Christine W Chen: Is it, do you think it matters if I, do you, should I try to just not go through the microphone and just go through my
Adam Chase Rani: it works right now. That's the thing. It's if you, if hopefully nothing is fussed and nothing will fuck up, I think it should be all right. Yeah, you should be good. And make sure that USB is snug in that computer.
Christine W Chen: Yeah, it is. Yeah.
Adam Chase Rani: But other than that, yeah that's it. Yeah, I, as far as for me I just been doing the same thing, just writing and whatnot as much as I possibly can. I did have a couple of shorts as of recently. And yeah, it was way better. It was just a simple or I'm sorry. No, it was one commercial, one short. And both of them were like three or four days. So it wasn't [00:23:00] anything like,
Christine W Chen: Hey, that's great.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah, no, it is. Despite, it was, I never worked with any of these people before on both of these shoots.
Christine W Chen: Were you, Arting or were you painting?
Adam Chase Rani: I did art PA for one and then I was a set deck for another for the short film and I was just an art PA for the commercial. But yeah, the here and there, man, here and there in writing mostly. But what I have been keeping up with is the armor Hannah Gutierrez's case versus the state of New Mexico from the Rust incident.
Christine W Chen: Oh, yeah.
Adam Chase Rani: And the first two days have I gotta say, I talked about it. I have a, for those of you don't know, Christine knows I have another podcast as well, where I dove deep, real deep into this rust case. Because the first two days of the trials happen on Thursday and Friday and this is going to go on for three weeks, by the way, so we're going to hear, we're going to see this case go on for probably until the [00:24:00] beginning of or like middle of March, something like that depending on how, because it's all jury based. So the jury is going to go through deliberations after the three weeks of trials and whatnot or of the trial. And I gotta tell you, man, it's fucking, I, talk about filmmaking education. This is probably the primo of film school education, is literally this case. Just by way of how many things have come to light.
In this case, especially with the opening arguments from the prosecution and the defense, which is represented by the armor, Hannah Gutierrez, that is probably the most.
Christine W Chen: Can you give a one to two sentence summary of what you've learned so far?
Adam Chase Rani: We still don't know where the live rounds have come from. So we're still trying to figure that out. [00:25:00] However, Hannah is. most likely, as far as I've seen so far, not the only guilty person here by a long shot, because there is a whole, but the prosecution's idea was that no, Hannah was the armor basically wanted to, thwart this set and had carelessness and didn't really give a shit. And this is, and the result of the death of Helena Hutchins, the director of photography, is on the hands of Hannah Gutierrez, which even Alec Baldwin and his lawyers have said, and he's also, by the way, fun fact, that case So there was one case where it was settled for involuntary manslaughter. He's going to get another case, I think, for a trial for involuntary manslaughter. this summer. Yeah, this summer. So he's going to go [00:26:00] through this again this summer. And depending on how, what the charges or what the vert is going to be. Oh, by the way, the charges involuntary manslaughter with the armor, by the way.
That's what the prosecution's going after. And the defense is basically saying look, Not only she wasn't aware of the live rounds, there were multiple parties of this set that absolutely probably had a good idea of where it came from, which is gonna be crazy because again, we don't have all of these answers, but with everything that has been coming up so far, It's been very revealing. And recently I don't know about recently, but over the past few months, the police interrogations have come out for almost everybody on the set. We got the first AD police interrogation. We got the armor interrogation. We got Alex's interrogation. [00:27:00] We even got prop master interrogation. We got like half the art department interrogation as well, including the prop house where the bullets came from. Yeah, this whole case is in my opinion, really fucking important and should be absolutely enlightening for filmmakers of all of us.
Christine W Chen: Yeah. So yeah. So anybody out there who is trying to learn about the film industry, really. Take a look, where, can people watch it, just on YouTube?
Adam Chase Rani: Oh, it's on YouTube, yeah. It's a open, it's it's it's a trial. So it's a, it's if you've ever seen court TV, with trials that happen on TV. The fucking Hannah, not Hannah Amber Heard thing, the Johnny Depp thing. I don't
Christine W Chen: ever listen to any trials, that's why I don't know.
Adam Chase Rani: Oh okay, fair enough. But I'm just saying like all those like famous cases and whatnot that get televised, like this, it's the same shit here. Yeah this is gonna, this is absolutely televised. So yeah, it's if for those of you who are really interested, I dove really deep into every little facet of those [00:28:00] interrogations which is still ongoing and developing you can watch that on my podcast because we only have an X amount of time left on this show. And I don't want to also bore the audience with legal shit and I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know half the shit that I'm saying some of the time, but I am. Okay.
Christine W Chen: What's your podcast?
Adam Chase Rani: It's well, it's just, it's the Adam is Chase podcast. It's on YouTube. Yeah just go watch it on YouTube. I'm going to have I'm going to have a Kyle WJ says likely inappropriate to be texting from a full moon. I don't know, what you mean, but I agree yeah.
Christine W Chen: What do you mean? Full moon, isn't full moon good luck?
Adam Chase Rani: I, I don't know. I guess so. I don't know. I know werewolves come out at full moon, so I don't know. But yeah, so that was, that case has been ongoing. I'm probably gonna cover it a little bit more. But yeah go on the YouTubes, go on the Apple podcasts and Spotify. You'll find it there.
Christine W Chen: It's only non film people that don't recognize that the responsibility, there's so many checks and balances on a film set that's supposed to prevent this stuff. So it's obvious that it, Hannah is not the only culprit for this. It's just trying to really dig and find all the people who are responsible for it. But on a film set, there's like, when I work with guns on a set, First thing I do is because I know that I personally don't have much experience with guns. I don't know anything really I Go to the armor and I say hey, can you look we all look we do it in a public setting I get somebody that I know knows about guns like the and a grip or whatever come together We all look at the freaking chamber.
Is it empty? Is it not empty? We shoot it at something like the floor You know, make sure, just in [00:30:00] case, we do it several times click, just to make sure if there is something, it would be emptied out. And then we go and we proceed. And this is not something that you just rush through.
And I it, and, yes, you will be on sets where people are like, Oh let's just, we just gotta do it, we just gotta the sun is going, and this is one of those things that you just, you don't do. you don't rush through it, also, can I
Adam Chase Rani: Sorry. Go ahead.
Christine W Chen: No. Go ahead.
Adam Chase Rani: I was going to ask you a question. So in my experience, you might, you're first AD you probably get this a lot, but at least for me, I've worked with armors before as well.
Christine W Chen: And I've handled weapons before ran safety checksare equally false.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah. But. Have you ever heard of an armor say to never point the gun down and fire because it will ruin the firing pin? Have you ever had that?
Christine W Chen: I haven't personally had that.
Adam Chase Rani: Neither have I. But apparently a lot between [00:31:00] Alex interrogation on this Russ incident and a couple of others too, except for I think they all say that Oh, it's just the number one rule that armor say you don't fire the weapon into the ground.
Adam Chase Rani: It's because they I never heard that before. And they say that's because you ruined the firing pin. It's one who gives a fuck about.
Christine W Chen: Yeah, exactly. I'd rather ruin the firing pit than shoot somebody.
Adam Chase Rani: Exactly. I do not want. to see a prop that I have checked and we haven't saw and checked for you to fire
Christine W Chen: at anyone,
Adam Chase Rani: point at anybody, and then something happens like that. That's on me. You know what I mean? That falls back on me.
Christine W Chen: Yeah. Fuck the firing pin.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah. I don't give a shit about no fucking firing pin. Like that that's why I don't know, this whole entire case has just been so interesting. And yeah. There's just there's so much, but I think one episode we can cover it.
If you want [00:32:00] just to have a summary of it all after the three weeks happened. When the verdict comes. Yeah. I think when the verdict comes, we can talk about it a little bit more, but yeah, it's just, I'm going to keep up with this, but I got to tell you, Christine, this is fucking riveting shit for filmmakers to learn from.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is taught in schools and shit, because this is this is a, I don't want to say a hilarious embarrassment because I mean what happened is a tragedy, but this is an embarrassment on almost every single account that isn't, that has not, and probably will not fall solely in the hands of one person.
It's just impossible.
Christine W Chen: There's multiple people's heads are gonna roll.
Adam Chase Rani: Oh my God. There's so much to talk about, but anyways, yeah we'll talk about it more later, but yeah, we've we're basically there. I think you've got to get out of here.
Christine W Chen: I'm going to if anybody here in [00:33:00] LA if you're a lady we have the Film Girls Brunch is happening at the Alamo Drafthouse downtown, if you would like to join.
Oh, that's fun. There'll be raffles. In fact, Get Reelismss is raffling off a book over there. Oh, shit. But yeah, it's like a bunch of awesome female filmmakers that are getting together and meeting up and staying vigilant together. But yes, that's where I have to run off to. And because I live in L. A. everything takes a ridiculous amount of time. Then it should. I discovered today that I actually live eight minutes from where I go cycle. But on a normal day, it takes me 30 minutes to get there.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah, that sounds like LA.
Christine W Chen: What the fuck?
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah, just to get a Eight
Christine W Chen: minutes to 30 minutes. What is that bullshit?
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah, just to get something to eat is like an hour excursion if it's down the street,
Christine W Chen: Excursion. I [00:34:00] know. Anytime Roxy's Oh, I'm going to run out and do an errand. I'm like, see you tomorrow. Five hours. Yeah.
Adam Chase Rani: I'll see you tomorrow.
Christine W Chen: Which is like crazy because I just came back from a country that's highly efficient,
Adam Chase Rani: right? It's
Christine W Chen: Oh, you want to see it? I doctor there's 50 of them and you can walk to them and you don't even need to make an appointment. And I'm like so it's now I'm understanding like my parents, they don't understand that the whole thing to get some of this care, they're like, Oh yeah, just go find an eye doctor. You should just go do that. And then get your eyes regularly checked up and stuff like that. I was like, you don't even get no, I had to send an appointment. It's going to be like three weeks out. Maybe I will book a gig, and then I it'll take me an hour to get there and it'll sit there and it's a whole, it's a whole thing.
Adam Chase Rani: It's, you have to plan an entire day for one fucking appointment, and
Christine W Chen: then it costs a lot of money. . Yeah. Oh yeah. Which is the Taiwan where it's free. Yeah,
Adam Chase Rani: free healthcare in Taiwan. [00:35:00] Really?
Christine W Chen: Yeah. Fuck yeah. Oh yeah. That's why I'm applying for my dual citizenship every,
Adam Chase Rani: oh, that's right. We talked about that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Fucking A man. All right. You heard it from Christine folks. You know what it is. It's the GetReelisms.com. Pick up your book, pick up everything, pick up your hats, pick up your shirts, pick it all up, everyone. You know what I mean? That's what, that's why we're here.
We're here to educate and sling some books while we're at it. Because why not?
Christine W Chen: We're, we want to remind everybody that Filmmaking is accessible, and it's fun, goddammit. Even though we grumble about it all the time, and Every day. It is. Every day. And it is very hard, but in these times, it's even more important to remember why you do it.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah.
Christine W Chen: And it's the why that makes us wake up and do it again, try again, and, do our best and push [00:36:00] through these times when there's no work around, and you feel like you're the only person who's not working in the world, and you're an absolute fucking failure. Just remember, everybody's in the same boat.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah. We all feel like failures in so many ways.
Christine W Chen: Use the time to write. Write. Do a lot of writing, everybody. Do a lot of writing. Join some writers groups. I'm in two right now. Hell yeah. And hells yeah. Yeah I'm in, Camille has a writers group. Oh, in fact you should join us sometime, Adam.
Yeah. Yeah. It's on Saturday, so yesterday, around it was 12 p. m. PST, my time, which means that's what, 2 p. m. your time? Yeah. Yeah. And we just, yeah, I just jump on zoom. And what it is that sometimes if you have something to share, you set, you share like your feature or your like 10 page of your feature and stuff, you ask for, feedback and you read other people's stuff too.
And it's nice. It's a nice built in time that you're like, I have [00:37:00] between this time is my writing time. And I've listened to so many podcasts or writers and stuff. And that's the biggest thing that they say is that. You have to do it consistently and you literally need to make time for your art and that means literally Scheduling it and say from 12 p.m. To 3 p. m I'm going to write and it doesn't matter if I don't write shit But I'm in the mindset that I'm supposed to be writing Most of the times something happens from it, Yeah, I've found that it works great if I set a time I say I'm going to do it You Yeah, I might take an hour and a half to get settled, get distracted, gotta make the tea. Okay, I made my tea. Oh crap, I need to go do that. But within that like period, there will be little snippets of brilliance and then you will be very happy that you made the time for yourself to do something that you've always wanted to do. Just create and write.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah, and I gotta say, turning off the Wi Fi helps as well, y'all. If you [00:38:00] are writing, like, when you're dedicating that time, just either do not disturb or just shut down that fucking Wi Fi by, you don't need all of the fucking distractions, unless you need music.
Christine W Chen: Yeah, I turn off my phone.
Adam Chase Rani: Yeah, if you need music, put on the music and whatnot, but yeah, it's just like seeing your phone and then checking your phone and then, checking your email because once I check my phone, then I check my email. Then when I check my email, I have to check Instagram. And then when I check Instagram, then I have to check Twitter. And then I go on YouTube and I cry for five hours. You know what I mean? So that's literally what happens. So yeah, whether or not you, you have the confidence, you do have the confidence, ladies and gentlemen you just got to get out there and write. You got to dedicate that time. Christine said,
Christine W Chen: yeah, find your tribe, dedicate the time, right? Kyle, if you're still on there, you need a fucking right. Stop telling me you're going to write. You got to write.
Adam Chase Rani: I know. I got to tell myself that too.
Christine W Chen: Yeah. Go write your scripts. Use this time that you didn't have to write.[00:39:00] And use this time to reconnect with your community because you're not alone. It sucks out there right now. Yeah. Stay in it. No egos. Take whatever temp jobs you need to do to get through this bullshit. It's only going to get worse because IOTC is about to strike. And yeah, so it's an alternate drag out, so yeah I teach piano, I teach stuff, I'm about to consider looking for an executive assistant or something job.
Which is the first time ever in my entire career I've had to do, to look for an another separate office job. I've always been able to like, gig my way, but I don't know. Times are rough right now.
Adam Chase Rani: I get it, man. I get it. Yeah, I get it. There's nothing else. I'm living gig to gig as well. And that's like paying. I can barely rub two nickels between my butt cheeks, bro. So anyways, that's been it. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you so much. We appreciate you. We got to go now. Thank you so much. Bye bye. Make some movies.
